IDC Construct Selected for Australia’s First Grid-Scale Iron Flow Battery (ESI, Maryborough)
IDC Construct has been selected by the Queensland Government as the lead contractor for Australia’s first grid-scale iron flow battery facility, delivered for ESI in Maryborough. The selection was officially announced by Deputy Premier and Treasurer Cameron Dick MP alongside Bruce Saunders MP, with the announcement carried on the official Queensland Government Treasury statements channel (statements.qld.gov.au).
Why this project matters
The ESI facility is the first grid-scale iron flow battery deployment of its kind in Australia. Iron flow batteries are a long-duration energy storage technology that uses safe, abundant materials (iron, salt and water) to store and dispatch renewable electricity over many hours — a critical missing piece in the Queensland grid as the state transitions toward renewables.
Selection of a regional Queensland contractor to deliver a first-of-its-kind energy facility reflects the depth of industrial construction capability in the Wide Bay-Burnett — and IDC Construct’s track record on complex industrial builds, including the recently completed 30,000 sqm Hyundai Rotem Manufacturing Facility for the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program.
